Welcoming the decision of the state government in appointing G.R Sofi as first chief information commissioner of Jammu and Kashmir, the Sangarsh RTI Movement, a pioneer RTI organization in Jammu and Kashmir promoting the cause of Right to Information, has thanked the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who has fulfilled his promise that he had made before the RTI activists during their meeting on January 5. Convener of the Sangarsh RTI Movement Balvinder Singh also expressed his gratitude to the Governor NN Vohra and leader of the Opposition Mehbooba Mufti for appointing the first chief information commissioner in the state.Other member of the movement, Ayaz Mughal, Raman Sharma, Darvinder Singh (coordinator, Doda Unit) also greeted the appointment of the chief information commissioner. It is pertinent to mention here that Sangash RTI Movement remained in forefront for persuading the government and leader of the opposition in deciding appointment of State Information Commission Members at an earliest. Nav Yug Women Liberation (NYWL), a non governmental organization (NGO) working in Jammu and Kashmir state for women empowerment, has expressed gratitude to selection panel including Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand and leader of opposition Mehbooba Mufti for appointing one of the most honest and senior most Income Tax officer GR Sofi as the first chief information commissioner of Jammu and Kashmir. Sneh Lata, president of the NYWL congratulated the government, citizens and RTI activists. In her message she said, “Now the citizens will have the privilege to make people at the helm of affairs accountable”. She also credited the RTI activists and termed the appointment of CIC as their victory. She urged upon the bureaucrats of the state to help the government in eradicating corruption and allow the citizens to exercise their constitutional right for making queries under RTI Act. She said elsewhere in the country the citizens were enjoying their right to ask, with the help of RTI they have successfully unearthed major scams. Sneh Lata requested the government to make state accountability commission re-functional.
