CIC’s move to impose penalty on erring PIOs hailed – JK Newspoint – 20 March 2011

Terming it a courageous decision, the Sangharsh RTI Movement, the RTI advocacy group has praised GR Sufi, the Chief Information Commissioner of Jammu and Kashmir for imposing penalty on two erring PIO’s for defying the provisions of State RTI Act. In a statement, the Sangharsh RTI group has cherished the decision of the CIC. “We also congratulate the citizens and activists, after this first ever historic judgment, now it seems that we have an institution to sort out the grievances of the applicants’, the Sangharsh in the statement added. The Sangharsh RTI Movement members including its convener, Balvinder Singh, Raman Sharma, Ayaz Mughal and Darvinder Singh said CIC has also warned the heads of departments who have not designated the PIOs to face action if they don’t do so forthwith. Activists also commended the press statement of CIC Sufi where he has cautioned the state bureaucracy not confined up to just technical compliance but the compliance in letter and spirit and not to take RTI Act mere a reference book. Convener, Balvinder Singh informed that their organization in collaboration with state government institutions, NGO’s and district administration will soon launch awareness programmes to make people aware about the RTI Act.
