RTI activists call on CM -JK Newspoint – 6 Jan 2011

“The Right to Information is the basic and fundamental principle of democracy and all people are required to be made aware of the importance of the same so that transparency of administration is ensured through communication of all information”, said the CM Omar Abdullah while interacting with a group of activists of RTI Act. Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Commissioner /Secr-etary General Administration Department and Director Information were also present in the meeting. The CM said that at present directions have already been communicated to all ranks and files of administration to dispose off applications on RTI without any delay.
Commissioner/Secretary GAD informed the meeting that all the applications are being disposed off without any delay and wherever any delay occurs activists are advised to inform him directly the same so that their applications are responded quickly.
The Chief Minister Omar Abdullah while underscoring the importance of RTI advised activists to act in a neutral manner and should not get trapped in any political colour but work actively to expose any corrupt or unscrupulous element on the basis of facts and investigative information. He said the instrument should not be used for blame games but real motive should be to bring the real facts before the public. He advised them to remain active in all the districts of the state with uniform zeal and enthusiasm. He said civil society should be involved by organizing big seminars in capital cities, towns, and villages.
He also advised Department of Information to launch a public awareness campaign through radio and television so that people understand their rights given to them under the provisions of the Act.
He also informed activists that the selection for chief Information Commissioner and Information Commissioner shall be completed before the end of this financial year. All the activists assured the CM that they will voluntarily render their services in extracting the information and pointing out loopholes in official working for redressal by the concerned authorities.
